Liverpool fans jeered when referee Massimo De Santis ignored claims for a penalty when Sami Hyypia was brought down by Didier Drogba on the edge of the six-yard box in what was the Reds' best chance of the half.

Chelsea beat Liverpool to win England's League Cup and both league matches on its way to the Premier League title last season, finishing 37 points ahead of the Reds. Liverpool had to get special dispensation from UEFA to defend its title.

MILAN, Italy (AP) -- David Pizarro's 49th-minute goal Wednesday gave Inter Milan a 1-0 win over Glasgow Rangers on Wednesday and the Group H lead in the Champions League.

The match was played in an empty San Siro stadium with Inter serving the second of a four-match supporter ban after last year's quarterfinal against AC Milan. Milan goalkeeper Dida was hit by a flare thrown by Inter fans.

Pizarro's goal came off a bouncing free kick through a number of players.

Inter had a chance to take the lead in the 38th but striker Julio Ricardo Cruz hit the post with a penalty attempt.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini rested his top striker Adriano ahead of Sunday's league match against Juventus.

Rangers' best chance was when Danish striker Peter Lovenkrands volleyed over the bar in the 10th.
