Another promoted side Getafe went second with 11 points after they secured a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Champions Barcelona romped to a 4-1 win over 10-man Real Betis to climb to seventh on eight points.

EARLY NERVES

Early on Real struggled to impose themselves on a promoted side who showed plenty of spirit, and a willingness to shoot with the merest glimpse of goal.

Alaves striker Rodolfo Bodipo had the home side's best chance after seven minutes, when he battled his way through and fired just wide of the post.

Gradually Real asserted themselves. Brazilian forward Julio Baptista forced Franco Constanzo into a fingertip save with a fierce low drive, and then thumped a header just over the bar from a corner.

England captain David Beckham nearly surprised Constanzo at his nearpost with an inswinging free kick from wide on the left, but Alaves remained a threat especially from set pieces.

Real broke the deadlock in spectacular style 13 minutes into the second half.

Raul's deep cross found the head of Alaves defender Mauricio Pellegrino on the edge of the area, but the Argentine's header struck team mate Juanito and bounced into he path of Ronaldo, who lashed an unstoppable first-time shot past Constanzo.
