Smuggler Lai in more Canadian trouble (Reuters) Updated: 2005-08-21 08:49
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Lai Changxing, one China's most wanted
fugitives, was ordered detained by a Canadian immigration adjudicator on Friday
for violating rules of an earlier release, Reuters reported.
Police
arrested Lai last week for violating terms of his house arrest, after he
allegedly attended a nighttime party hosted by people linked to an Asian
organized crime gang, according to immigration officials.
Lai is waiting for the Canadian Supreme Court to decide if it will hear his
bid to avoid extradition to China, where he is accused of running a ring that
smuggled billions of dollars in goods into that country in the mid-1990s.
Lai has denied the allegations and fled to Canada in 1999 with his family and
is seeking asylum.
A Canadian Immigration and Refugee panel member ordered Lai detained for
seven days when he will have another hearing.
