Man United starts with 2-0 victory at Everton

Wayne Rooney scored against his former club and Manchester United launched its latest English Premier League challenge with a 2-0 road victory over Everton on Saturday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy also scored as United, which won only one of its first five games last season and never recovered, beat an Everton team that finished fourth last season.

In other featured opening day matches, West Ham came from behind to beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 and Tottenham won 2-0 at Portsmouth. Champions League winner Liverpool was held to a 0-0 tie by Middlesbrough.

In other results, Aston Villa and Bolton tied 2-2 with all four goals in the first nine minutes, Charlton won 3-1 at promoted Sunderland despite playing with 10 men, Manchester City played a 0-0 tie at home by West Bromwich Albion and Fulham and Birmingham drew 0-0.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea starts defense of the league title until Sunday, when it visits promoted Wigan. Last season's runner up, Arsenal, is also in action Sunday at home to Newcastle.
