Coal mine gas blast kills 14 in Guizhou
Fourteen miners were killed and two others missing in a gas explosion taking place early Monday morning in a coal mine in Liupanshui City, southwest China's Guizhou Province. Information provided by the provincial bureau of production safety said 39 miners were working under the coal mine shaft when the explosion occurred around 3 a.m. at Wanzi Coal Mine in Shuicheng County. Only 23 miners managed to escape to the ground alive after the accident. Rescue operation is underway. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Wangzi Coal Mine, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons, is a township-run colliery that lacked a safety certification but had other required licenses.
