England international Sol Campbell has been ruled out of Arsenal's start to the Premiership campaign, as well as England's friendly against Denmark later this month.

And there are already doubts whether the centre-back, who also misses Sunday's Community Shield against Chelsea, will be ready for England's World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Northern Ireland next month.

Campbell, who was plagued by injuries last season, is still recovering from a calf problem.

Wenger has described the 30-year-old defender as "not really injured, but not ready to play," while indicating that it would take "two to three weeks" for him to regain full fitness.

That definitely rules him out of Sunday's game, as well as Arsenal's opening Premiership match against Newcastle, while he is also a doubt for the clash against Chelsea on August 21.

Wenger added: "I'm confident that Sol Campbell will not have a season like he did last year, but nobody knows how many games he will play this season."
