New program launched to control epidemic diseases

The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has launched a nationwide program, which aims to prevent and control serious epidemic diseases in Autumn this year.

The program has placed controlling further outbreaks of the pig-borne disease, which has killed nearly 40 people in Southwest China's Sichuan province, as its top priority.

Jia Youlin, the national chief veterinarian details the initiative.

"The program, mainly consisting of immunizations, will adopt comprehensive measures such as disinfection, killing sick pigs, quarantine and supervision. In this way, we try to prevent and control all serious epidemic diseases effectively, including the pig-borne disease."

In an urgent notice issued nationwide, the ministry asked all relevant government departments to work together to prevent any killing, transportation or sales of dead or sick pigs.

It also called for intensified efforts to crack down on other illegal activities in the pork industry, such as injecting water into pork to add extra weight.
