Beijing needs to step up its work relating to fire prevention and control in its underground places, such as underground supermarkets, restaurants, sports clubs and shopping malls, said a senior Beijing official.

It is "unsafe" in some of the underground places, said Beijing Vice Mayor Lu Hao at a recent work safety forum.

Fire-exit passages in numerous underground shopping malls is only only 0.6 meters wide, as against the required width of 1.4 meters, Mayor Lu acknowledged.

The government has required installing fluorescent indicator lights at the stairway of underground sites, but many fail to meet their requirements.

Lu said his municipal government departments should intensify checks on underground places and pressurize them to abide by relevant regulations.

Lu also called for media organizations to increase their reportage on accidents, so as to help increase citizens' safety awareness.
