Canada won its first medal on the opening day of the 15-day competition when Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion earned bronze in synchronized platform with 328.80.

"It was just a great moment and I hope people enjoyed the show," said Benfeito, a 16-year-old from Montreal who couldn't stop laughing when she heard the loud cheers from the crowd.

"We're not used to that," she said.

There was intermittent rain, oppressive humidity, mud and plenty of empty seats on Sunday on Saint-Helene Island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, site of the 1967 World's Fair.

Organizers declined to discuss slow-moving ticket sales, saying they would do so when the meet ends on July 31. The 11th world championships are in North America for the first time.

The day's other medals were awarded in 5-kilometer open water swimming.

Russian teenager Larisa Ilchenko won the women's gold, and Thomas Lurz of Germany took the men's title.

Americans Margy Keefe and Chip Peterson finished second in their respective races.

Edith Van Dijk of the Netherlands was third in the women's race and Italy's Simone Ercoli won bronze in the men's contest.

Meanwhile, in women's preliminary water polo, the United States and Spain played to a 6-6 tie, as did Venezuela and Cuba; Hungary defeated China 18-4; Russia shut out Uzbekistan 18-0; Greece defeated New Zealand 9-4; and Australia beat Germany 15-2; the Netherlands edged Brazil 7-6; and Canada got by Italy 8-7.

Eight synchronized swimming teams advanced to the duet final later in the week.
