He also pointed out that the Taiwanese authorities have deliberately played down celebrations of China's victory over Japan 60 years ago, which indicates the island's evident inclination towards "independence."

The aim of the delegation's trip to the Chinese mainland has been to promote the nation's revitalization and arouse patriotism and nationalism among younger generations, Yok told his audience of about 300 teachers and students.

The biggest aim of the mainland trip, he said, was to gain a better understanding of the Chinese national spirit, which he will take back to Taiwan.

Tang Yi, a junior student majoring in advertising, said he was impressed by Yok's speech, saying the chairman was very sincere when speaking of wartime history and patriotism.

"Most of the Taiwanese are looking for peace and common prosperity across the Straits," said Wang Chang-hsien, a Taiwanese student who is pursuing his doctorate at the university. "Yok spoke our heart."
