Greece unveils ambitious plan to bid for EURO 2012

The Greek government on Monday unveiled an ambitious plan to spend 115 million euros (about 138 million US dollars) on building and renovating six stadia needed for their candidacy to host the 2012 European soccer championship.

The Greek bid will include the six stadia in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Volos and Iraklio used in 2004 Olympics soccer tournament, plus two new privately-funded facilities in therural cities of Ioannina (northwest Greece) and Larissa (central Greece).

Of eight proposed stadia, only the 72,000-seat Olympic Stadium in Athens and the 33,000-seat Karaiskaki Stadium in Piraeus, near the capital, are deemed ready to run, the semi-official Athens News Agency (ANA) reported.

UEFA mandates the inclusion of one 50,000-seat, two 40,000-seatand five 30,000-seat venues.

Greece's bid will be submitted on July 21, with three finalists to be selected in December. UEFA will announce the winning bid in December 2006.
