Park gets British work permit
Korea Republic international Park Ji-sung has cleared the final hurdle in his move to English Premier League giants Manchester United after being granted a British work permit.
Park has got clearance from the British government to play for Manchester United [WSG] The 24-year-old midfielder, who was signed from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in a four million pound (US$7.025 million) deal last month, had his application approved this week after initially being rejected by the British Home Office. The BBC reported Tuesday that Park’s application had initially been turned down because he had not played in 75% of his country's internationals in the last two years. However, the decision was overturned on appeal as it was recognized that he is an established international who has become an increasingly influential figure in the Korea Republic squad. Park was a member of the Korea squad at the 2002 World Cup and 2004 Asian Cup and has played in all five of his nation’s World Cup qualifying matches this year, scoring a fine individual goal in their 4-0 trouncing of Kuwait last month that sealed qualification for Germany 2006. He was also a key member of the PSV side that won the Dutch league title and reached the UEFA Champions League semi-final last season. Park will be joining Manchester United’s preseason, which began this week and could make his club debut in one of their upcoming friendlies against Scottish side Clyde on July 16 or Peterborough on July 19. He is also expected to be part o the club’s tour of East Asia in lat July that includes matches against the Hong Kong national team on July 23, China Super League side Beijing Hyundai on July 26, and J.League outfits Kashima Antlers on July 28 and Urawa Reds on July 30.
