From 2000 to 2004, military and civil planes in Taiwan suffered a total of 681 bird collisions, with the aircraft damaged in 75 cases, the statistics indicated.

According to Wang Jung-chou, head of the foundation, bird collisions with aircraft are very common in Taiwan, where has more than 500 indigenous and migratory bird species and 27 airports.

Wang said the foundation has introduced from abroad the latest bird-dispersing equipment such as gas bombs, ultrasound and laser guns and that the devices will be used at local airports "if they are determined to be effective".
