Number of dengue cases in Singapore rises in June (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-06-30 22:26
Some 610 dengue cases were found in Singapore in the first three weeks of
June while the number of cases for the whole month of May was 611, Channel
NewsAsia reported Thursday night.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) attributed the rise to the warmer
weather in June, which is expected to continue through July and August.
The report quoted the NEA as saying that the number of dengue cases from
January to the third week of June was nearly 5,000, more than double the number
in the same period last year, and only one death has been reported up to now.
To tackle the situation, the NEA has extended its campaigns to spread the
dengue prevention message to Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations and trains since
the beginning of June, which will last till the middle of August.
It also strengthened its efforts to reduce the Aedes mosquito population such
as inspection of premises for breeding grounds, including parks, vacant lands,
roof tops and pump rooms.
