Two people were confirmed dead in a gold mine collapse in central China's Hubei Province on Saturday, the local production safety authorities said on Monday.

Three villagers entered the mine in Zigui County on the outskirts of Yichang City at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and one of them was trapped when the mine's ceiling collapsed. The alleged "owner"of the mine, surnamed Li, rushed to the site for emergency rescue but got trapped too in a subsequent collapse.

The two bodies were retrieved at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.

The local production safety administration said the gold mine was closed down two years ago.
