Real madrid's England star Michael Owen might come back to English premier league next season, local report said on Monday.

The tabloid Sun said that Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has been interested in Owen, who moved from Liverpool to Read Madrid on a 8-million-pound contract last year.

The England striker scored 14 goals but still has to fight for the starting place in the star-studded Real.

Owen was valued at 13 million pounds by Real, but United reportedly only had 6.25 million pounds to spend before the end of their financial year on July 31.

That money has been assigned to the signings of Fulham's Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and South Korean midfielder Park Ji Sung from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

United currently have four strikers, including Ruud van Nistelrooy, France international Louis Saha, Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney. One of the strikers might have to leave Old Trafford if United wants to sign Owen.

United were also interested in midfielder Jermaine Jenas, whosefirst-team slot at Newcastle is under threat since the arrival of Scot Parker from Chelseal, according to the Sun.

Ferguson is bidding to rebuild United, which lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal and finished a distant third behind champions Chelsea in the Premiership. The club also went out of the Champions League in the last 16.
