Updated: 2005-06-20 20:01

One person has been missing and 26others rescued after a ferry boat capsized in surging floods in Hezhou City of southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Monday afternoon, local government announced.

Passengers are all local folks and rescuers are searching for those missing round the clock, according to the city's flood control and drought relief headquarters.

The shipwreck happened around 3 p.m. Monday on the Guijiang River at the city's Qing'an Village and most of those passengers were returning home by boat, according to the headquarters.

The water level of the Guijiang River has risen rapidly over the past week owing to the continuous torrential rains at the upper reaches. By 4 p.m. Monday, the water level reached 60.28 meters, 1.78 meters higher than the warning level, according to local hydrographic station.

The headquarters warned local governments at various levels in the city to get fully prepared for new floods.
