At least 20 students were missing in a mountain torrent that hit a school at Shalan town in Ning'an city of northeastern Heilongjiang Province around 4 p.m. Friday, according to local sources.

Rescue work is underway and major provincial government leaders, including Song Fatang, secretary of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China, have went to the site to direct the rescue operation.

The exact number of victims is unavailable due to poor communication service. Xinhua reporters are on the way to the site, which is about 450 kilometers away from Harbin, the provincial capital.
