Ex-lover masterminds journalist's finger cutting
Guangdong police detained seven suspects involved in the injury of a journalist, a spokesman said Wednesday in Zhongshan, a city neighboring Guangzhou. An ex-girlfriend of the Southern Metropolitan News journalist hired the suspects to cut off the forefinger and middle finger from his right hand, the spokesman said. The woman surnamed Bai, a Hong Kong resident who had moved from Hubei Province, was still at large. The announcement dismissed rampant speculations that the victim had been the subject of a revenge attack for a muckraking report. Bai complained to Peng, one of the suspects, in March that the journalist wanted to leave her after many years of cohabitation despite her several abortions for him. Bai wanted Peng to get revenge for her and promised 50,000 yuan (US$6,050) as a reward. Bai brought Peng to the journalist's apartment in Zhongshan a week later and gave him the keys as well as a photo of the victim. Bai also paid 10,000 yuan as down payment. Peng hired four people through two others and the four, from Panyu, Guangzhou, chopped off the victim's fingers May 18. One of them brought the fingers to Peng, who received 40,000 yuan from Bai after showing her the trophy. Police caught three suspects in Panyu on May 25 and a fourth the next day. A fifth was seized in Xiangfan, Hubei Province on May 29 with the help of local police. Peng and another suspect were caught shortly after.
