Chinese migrant building workers join trade unions
About 35 percent of Chinese migrant building workers have joined trade unions, a step forward towards securing migrant workers' rights. Of the 40 million migrant construction workers in China, about 30 percent or more than 11 million, have joined in the local trade unions, said Li Changchun, a spokesman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. "The migrant building workers have received less education and thus their rights are more easily infringed upon," he said. China has placed more emphasis on absorbing the increasing number of migrant workers as trade union members in recent years. "Enrolling in the trade unions, the migrant workers can receive more protection of their rights such as getting payments on time and being covered by work safety insurance," Li said. |
