Zheng lost the command to the rival in the opening set and conceded the loss without any chance to break. But she fought back in the second with a break in the 6th game and levelled the score.

In the decider, Zheng managed a break in the start and took a 2 nil lead. However consecutive faults in the fourth buried her vantage but lifted Schiavone's morale, with which the Italian get the upper hand 5-3 and clinched the victory.

Zheng's loss makes 19-year-old Peng Shuai the only Chinese hope in the women's singles competition. The girl is to take on Lindsay Davenport of the U.S in the second round.
