Chakvetadze to play Venus in Istanbul

Seventh-seeded Anna Chakvetadze defeated fellow Russian Tatiana Panova 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the Istanbul Cup on Wednesday to set up a quarterfinal match against Venus Williams.

Chakvetadze plays Thursday against the top-seeded Williams, who is looking for her first tournament victory since Warsaw in April 2004. The final of the $200,000 Istanbul Cup — a warmup for the French Open — is Saturday.

Also, second-seeded Nicole Vaidisova easily defeated Ivana Abramovic 6-2, 6-3 and will face fifth-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the quarterfinals.

Groenefeld topped Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-3, 6-2, while third-seeded Anna Smashnova defeated Jennifer Hopkins 6-1, 6-0 and eighth-seeded Mashona Washington beat Elena Vesnina 7-5, 6-1.

Israel's Shahar Peer ousted Akiko Morigami 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and will meet Tszvetana Pironkova in the quarterfinals. Pironkova rallied to beat Yuliana Fedak 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
