Anti-Violence Commission reprimands Eto'o for Madrid taunts (Agencies) Updated: 2005-05-18 20:24
Spain's Anti-Violence Commission said Wednesday it will write to FC Barcelona
striker Samuel Eto'o to express its displeasure at taunts he directed at Real
Madrid during his team's league title celebrations. Eto'o used insulted
Madrid on Sunday _ a day after Barcelona won the national title for the first
time since 1999 _ when telling 98,000 fans at Camp Nou stadium that his former
club should honor the champion. The state-run commission also backed the
country's soccer federation, which said Tuesday it is investigating Eto'o's
conduct. If the federation charges the 24-year-old Cameroon striker, he could be
fined. Real Madrid said it accepted an apology issued by Eto'o on
Monday. Eto'o, Africa's player of the year the past two years, arrived at
Madrid as a teenager but, after loan spells with Leganes and Espanyol, failed to
gain a regular first-team place. He then spent five years at Mallorca through
2004, although Madrid retained half his playing rights and traded him to
Barcelona. He was the league's leading scorer this season with 24
goals.
