Bad weather kills 24, injures hundreds in China At least 24 people have died in China after a blizzard in the northwest and torrential rains in the southeast of the country. At least nine people were killed, eight were missing and over 700 others were injured after torrential rains devastated parts of the southeastern province of Fujian, the official Xinhua news agency said Monday. The rains hit the northern and central parts of Fujian over the weekend, damaging thousands of houses and destroying farmland in several regions, Xinhua said, adding that more bad weather was forecast in the coming days. Meanwhile, 15 people were killed and 13 others were injured when a blizzard struck northwestern China, according to the same source. More than 70 people working for a subsidiary of the China National Petroleum Corporation were conducting field exploration near the town of Mangya in Qinghai province when the blizzard struck Friday, Xinhua said. The team tried to evacuate immediately, but several members were unable to escape due to the heavy snow, it said. Rescuers uncovered 15 bodies on Saturday, but were impeded in their efforts by the low visibility in the area. |
