Snowstorm kills 15 explorers in NW China (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-05-16 19:17 Fifteen explorers engaging in
fieldwork were killed by heavy snowstorm Friday afternoon in Haixi Prefecture in
northwest China's Qinghai Province, according to the safe production supervision
administration of the prefecture.
The 15 victims were hired workers with the Qinghai Physical Exploration No.
217 Team, which belongs to the Eastern Physical Exploration Company under the
China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the sources said on Monday.
On May 13, more than 70 physical explorers in eight groups from the
exploration team were operating in the field in the Mangya Township of the
prefecture when they were hit by heavy snowstorm, rainstorm and sandstorm
simultaneously.
The exploration team immediately organized withdrawal of the workers.
However, the rescuers could not find all the explorers due to the
widely-scattered operation sites and low visibility.
The rescuers found 6 workers dead at operation sites at 2"By press time, a
total of 15 explorers were found dead and 13 others injured in the snowstorm
which was unlikely to happen once in a century, the sources said, adding that
the rescue work and investigation are still going on.
