Hou Jianjun, former deputy to the Liaoning Provincial People's Congress, was sentenced to death for murder Friday by a local court.

Hou was also deprived of his life-long political rights and fined nearly 155,000 yuan (about 18,800 US dollars) as compensation to the victim's family, according to the Fushun Intermediate People's Court.

Court investigations found that Hou's sports-utilities vehicle had a minor accident and hurt Qiu Ji, a 55-year-old retiree, in the small hours of March 28 in Fushun. As the leftside rearview mirror of the car was damaged in the accident, Hou got off his carand had a wrangle with Qiu. Qiu tried to run away for about 50 meters, but Hou, driving his car, chased Qiu onto the sidewalk andknocked him down again. Qiu later died from skull fracture and hemorrhage, according to the court.

After the accident, Hou fled from the scene, but surrendered topolice later and was confirmed to be drunk when committing the crime, police said.

Hou, who served as board chairman of Xingye Mechanisation Transport Company Limited, was arrested for murder after having been deprived of the title as a deputy to the Provincial People's Congress, according to local police.

Hou will appeal the decisions to a higher court, said Hou's attorney.
