Atletico Madrid captain Fernando Torres has apologised to fans for his side's elimination from the King's Cup at the hands of Osasuna and called on the club to resist making wholesale changes at the end of the season.

"We haven't lived up to expectations throughout the season and ask the fans for forgiveness for what happened against Osasuna," the Spanish international striker said after his side went out 1-0 on aggregate after a goalless draw at the Calderon in Thursday's semi-final second leg.

"I hope the fans will stick by us for the rest of the season even though it will be difficult for them not to display their anger when we play on Sunday.

"We are all very sad about what happened, even though we gave everything we could."

Atletico have also struggled in the league, a five-match winless streak leaving them out of the race for European places in 11th position in the standings.

Torres, Atletico's leading scorer this season with 16 goals, said that the club should resist the temptation to panic.

"Teams are made in a year and it would be a mistake to make decisions in the heat of the moment. The core of the team is solid, the coach knows the players and if we all stick together it will be easier next season."

Coach Cesar Ferrando, who took charge at the start of the season, added: "Leaving would be a coward's option, but if the clubs tells me to leave I will go and I will accept the decision."
