Tiger eager to meet his new mate
Dawei, a Siberian tiger from Dalian, Liaoning Province, is waiting anxiously at his newly built two-room suite in Shanghai to meet his new mate. In a couple of days, the two-year-old will be officially introduced to his local girlfriend, a two-year-old female tiger who grew up at the Shanghai Wild Animal Park. The match will be significant to the park's tiger family, whose 60 members are currently obsessed by various genetic defects due to inbreeding. "Dawei, who is the offspring of a remote family in Germany, is a big hope for the rejuvenation of our tiger family," said Su Feilong, a park official. Su said most tigers at the park are smaller than usual, and some were even born lame, cockeyed or mentally retarded. Traveling to the city during the Labor Day holiday, Dawei will stay alone to
adjust himself to the new environment, and then meet his new mate and spend time
with her in the park.
