A Chinese citizen with permanent US residency was sentenced yesterday to five months in prison for trying to help another man enter Canada illegally.

Yang Yi, who was born in Fujian Province, moved to the United States with his father after his parents divorced when Yang was nine years old, according to the court.

He is currently enrolled at a famous US university, which court officials would not name, and holds a US green card.

Last October, Yang returned his hometown in Fujian Province to spend time with his mother.

One day when he was having dinner with his mother at home, a stranger named Ye Jindian dropped.

Ye said he was engaged in helping local workers find jobs abroad. Because Yang just returned from America, Ye said he wanted to learn something about the labor situation there.

When Yang's mother left for a while, Ye revealed his real purpose. He said he was having trouble helping a worker get visa to Canada.

The court heard that Ye offered Yang US$5,000 if he would let the worker use his identification to get into Canada.

Yang felt it risky though he didn't know much about the Chinese law.

Ye promised the plan would go on smoothly and said even if Yang was caught the harshest punishment he would face would be a fine because he had a US green card.

Yang finally agreed to the scheme.

On October 20 last year, Yang came to Shanghai by train to meet the stowaway surnamed Ni, the court heard.

As they had planned, Yang went to the Pudong International Airport three days later. Using his passport, he got an air ticket and boarding pass for a trip to Vancouver.

Before this, Ni had entered the airport lounge with an air ticket to Hong Kong.

When they met, they exchanged their boarding passes. Yang gave Ni a falsified Japanese passport that had been prepared beforehand and Ni gave his passport to Yang.

When Yang tried to get on the flight to Hong Kong with Ni's passport, he was arrested, as was Ni, according to the court.
