Clinton Foundation helps curbing AIDS in Yunnan
The US-based Clinton Foundation will help Yunnan Province in its battle against HIV/AIDS during the next three years.
The foundation will focus its resources on anti-retroviral drug treatment and upgrading an AIDS laboratory. Representatives of the Clinton Foundation and Yunnan health department officials discussed details of cooperation in AIDS prevention and treatment at a conference recently in Kunming, capital of Yunnan. The Clinton Foundation provided Yunnan with timely and badly needed support, said an official with the provincial health department. The Clinton Foundation, a non-government organization set up after former US President Bill Clinton left office, has launched AIDS treatment programs in 18 countries in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. This was the first time the Clinton Foundation and Yunnan agreed to cooperate in AIDS treatment. Yunnan reported a total of 16,141 HIV carriers and 1,063 AIDS patients at the end of last year - both the biggest numbers nationwide. A lack of measures to intervene in the activities of high-risk groups was blamed for the rapid increase. Experts warned China is now in a period when the HIV/AIDS virus will spread quickly, especially among high-risk groups, which include drug addicts that share needles and homosexuals who practice unsafe sex. The Clinton Foundation last month announced it would provide antiretroviral
treatment to 10,000 children in 10 countries by the end of this year.
