Latest mine accident kills 20
Twenty miners have been confirmed dead and 10 others were still missing on Monday in a flooded coal mine in Jiaohe, a city in Northeast China's Jilin Province, according to the mine's rescue headquarters. On May 1, rescuers found 15 bodies in the shaft in addition to five bodies found on April 27, a spokesperson said. On April 24 the Tengda Coal Mine flooded when water from the neighboring Ji'an Mine entered the shaft, trapping 69 workers. Thirty-nine were rescued the next day. Last night there was still no information about the 10 miners still underground. The rescue team was working on a plan on how to find them. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, the headquarters said. In another development, the death toll from a coal mine explosion last Thursday in northwestern China's Shaanxi Province has risen to 21 with the death of another miner in hospital on Monday night, rescuers said yesterday. Zhang Zhifeng was rescued on Saturday morning from the Shangyukou Colliery, a private mine in Hancheng city. But he suffered serious burns and had been in a coma since his rescue. Doctors did all they could to save him but his injuries were too severe. |
