Coal mine gas blast kills two

XI'AN: A gas blast killed two miners and trapped 23 underground in a colliery on Thursday night in Hancheng, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, sources with Hancheng government said on Friday.

The explosion took place at about 9:15 pm at the Xiayukou Colliery, a private coal mine in the city. Thirty-two miners were working underground. By press time, seven had been saved, two found dead and 23 remained trapped underground.

In another mine accident, five miners were rescued 60 hours after they had been trapped in a flooded coal mine in Longxipu Town of Xinshao County, central China's Hunan Province, according to a source with county government of on Friday.

Those trapped were rescued by 10:00 pm on Thursday, the government source said. The accident occurred at the Tangbian Coal Mine when 16 miners were working underground. Eleven managed to escape.
