Wimbledon will offer the most prize money in the history of tennis for its 2005 Championships, increasing the pool by 3.9 percent to 10,085,510 pounds ($19.30m).

Women will continue to be paid less at the June 20-July 3 London grasscourt grand slam, but the gap is closing organizers said on Tuesday.

"Our decisions are always made on market forces and, in our judgement, this is a fair decision to make," All England Club chairman Tim Phillips told reporters.

Women's prize money for the singles was improved by 5.9 percent while the men's singles money rose by 4.6 percent.

That means this year the Wimbledon men's singles champion will earn 630,000 pounds and the champion woman will get 600,000 pounds.

"The prize money available on the (women's) WTA Tour is still substantially less than that on the (men's) ATP Tour and there are only two tournaments in the world that pay men and women the same," Phillips said, referring to the Australian and U.S. Opens.

"You will recall from previous years that there are all sorts of issues we take into account; for example the leading women win a bigger proportion of their prize money because unlike the men they play the doubles as well. Women earn more per minute played and more per game. "

The 2004 French Open prize pot was 13.26m euros ($17.33m) while the 2005 Australian Open paid out 19.1m Australian dollars ($14.90m).

Security for the Wimbledon tournament will be stepped up for 2005.

Spectators will be restricted to one bag per person and hard-sided hampers and cool-boxes will be banned for the first time. Bag-searchers will be deployed in the queues and searches of cars will be stepped up.

The 2005 Championships will also be the last for Alan Mills as referee. He is stepping down after 23 years in the hot seat.
