Man kills five then commits suicide
A man shot five people to death and then killed himself on Monday in Qiuxian County, northern Hebei Province, local police said yesterday. The man, Wang Yanjun, was a cashier with the Xiangchenggu Credit Cooperative in Qiuxian County. He stole 100,000 yuan (US$12,000) in cash from the cooperative at about 1:00pm, killing three colleagues with a rifle during the robbery. Wang shot dead another two men on the road during his escape in a red car, police said. At 2:40pm Wang attempted to drive into the county's public security bureau, but was prevented by two guards. He fired at them but missed, only smashing some windows. He then telephoned his wife and said, "I have killed five people, and I am at the public security bureau's gate now. I owe a lot to you and our child." He then shot himself. Fifteen bullet shells and four bullets were found later. Further investigation into the armed robbery was under way. Local officials held an urgent meeting on Monday night to strengthen control over guns, bullets and explosives.
