Mexican athletes to guarantee Olympics commitment
Mexican athletes will write down their goals for the 2008 Olympic Games so as to keep and receive official financing for their training, the National Sports Commission (CONADE) said on Friday. The athletes will write letters to "commit to continue improving themselves for the Beijing 2008 Olympics", and "write down their expectations for every year" without an official obligation to finance them through the fund known as the Integral Committment of Mexico Towards its Athletes (CIM), according to the CONADE. Carlos Hermosillo, deputy director of the CONADE, assured that the letters will be flexible enough so as to consider circumstances surrounding the preparation of the athletes. "The athlete could plan its targets and short- and long-term programs, but always exposed to lesions and circumstances that could affect his orher performance," said Hermosillo, a former top-scorer in the Mexican soccer league and ex-member of the national team. CIMA, created in 1999 by the government and private firms, has 27 athletes with potential to reach the Beijing olympiad. The athletes receive an average 357,142 U.S. dollars a month. The beneficiaries of the program include medalists in Athens 2004 Ana Guevara (silver, 400 meters), Belem Guerrero (silver, cycling), Oscar and Iridia Salazar (silver and bronze, respectively, taekwondo). They receive 2,000 dollars a month each.
