China to host world boxing championships (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-04-07 09:25 The 13th world boxing championships will be held
in Mianyang of southwest China's Sichuan Province from November 5 to 14 this
year, organizers said on Wednesday.
It will be the first time for China to host amateur boxing's premier
competition.
Zheng Heping, vice mayor of Mianyang, the second largest city of Sichuan
Province after its capital Chengdu, said that all the cost for staging the event
will be raised through sponsorships, advertisement and souvenir sales, instead
of governmental funds.
Zheng added that boxers from 62 countries and regions have confirmed their
participation and the event will attract some 4,000 boxers, referees, officials
and fans.
A new 6,000-seat gymnasium is under construction for the championships.
Mianyang has hosted several big sports events since 2000, including the
National Farmers' Games,the National Sports Gala, the International Sports
Dancing Open and the 6th Asian Dragonboat
Championships.
