China sweeps diving Grand Prix
China dominated the finals of the FINA diving Grand Prix on Sunday, with 15-year-old Zhang Chen beating Olympic champion and countryman Hu Jia for his first gold medal in the men's platform. The Chinese women took first and second in the springboard event.
Nancilea Underwood of the United States was third in the women's 3-meter springboard.
Zhang drew six perfect 10s from judges for his fifth dive off the 10-meter platform to earn 523.32 points. Hu finished with 510.96 while Australia's Robert Newbery took third with 502.93.
"I didn't think much about the pressure from my elder rivals," Zhang said. "The victory is a boost for me ... Now I hope I can compete in the 2008 Olympic Games."
Hu added: "I was exhausted because I was not in my peak form, but I'm satisfied with my dives. I did my best while Zhang was perfect."
Defending champion Wu Minxia made a strong comeback in the last two dives to capture the 3-meter springboard. She pulled ahead with 363.72 points, beating doubles partner Li Ting (356.76). Underwood finished with the bronze at 317.34.
