SHANGHAI: The trial of two men charged with possession of almost 1 kilogram of heroin began in Shanghai on Friday.

The two suspects, Sabirov Suhail, from Kyrgyzstan, and Nuermaimai Abula, from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, face more than seven years in prison if found guilty of possessing the 900 grams of heroin they are accused of having.

Last August, the two defendants along with a man called Pierkaiti, already convicted in Xinjiang of being the head a drugs gang, heard that a bag containing the heroin had been left in a luggage room at Shanghai Railway Station.

"The heroin was imported from Kyrgyzstan by someone in the same circle as the two defendants," said Xu Jing, prosecutor from the Shanghai No 2 People's Procuratorate.

"After failing to sell the drug in Xinjiang, someone then transported it to Shanghai and left it in the office,"

"A man called Wufu, also in their circle, had the ticket for the bag, but before he could use it, it was taken by the two accused." Wufu has provided his testimony to the court.

After being hired by Pierkaiti, Suhail and Abula arrived in Shanghai from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, by train on the evening of August 20, said Xu.

A few minutes after taking the bag in which the heroin was found, they were caught by local police. Later the same evening, Pierkaiti was caught in Xinjiang, and confessed to the crime.

Abula has been working very well with the police and prosecutors during the investigations, according to Xu, but at Friday's hearing he denied having anything to do with the heroin.
