20% of Taiwanese men on wife hunt
According to Mun Sang-poh, a large gender discrepancy exists in the numbers of unmarried Taiwanese. By the end of last year, Taiwan was home to 3.45 million unmarried men above the age of fifteen, while the number of unmarried women stood at 2.97 million. In other words, one Taiwanese man in five is without a wife. Broken down into the age cohorts, the number of married women between 15 and 29 years old was twice that of men. According to the Foundation of Women's Rights Promotion and Development, this phenomenon is influenced by the traditional notion that the husband should be older than the wife. In 2003, the average age for a Taiwanese man to marry was 31, while it was
only 27 for women. Such disparities decline gradually with the increasing age of
the sample.
