Twin girl swimmers at the ripe old age of 6 in Wanzhou of Chongqing Municipality have tackled a trek across the Jialing River.

Xiong Yaxian and Xiong Yazhou conquered the river at its Shimenjiang section - where it is about a kilometre wide, the Chongqing Evening News reports.

The twins learned to swim less than a year ago because their father wanted them to keep fit and lose some weight.

They are believed to be the youngest swimmers in the city to have beaten the Jialing.
