Rescuers are trying to save the 11 people left stranded underground after the shaft ceiling collapse in a coal mine under construction in Datong, a city in Shanxi Province, at wee hours Monday, local officials said.

The officials of the Shanxi Provincial Coal Mine Safety Supervision Bureau said that a 40-meter-long section of the shaft ceiling collapsed suddenly at about 00:40, trapping 11 builders who were engaged in boring operation underground.

According to experts, the collapse might be the aftermath of mining operations and movements of the earth's crust in the surroundings.

Datong is a major coal production base in China. Tashan colliery, where the accident occurred, belongs to the Datong Coal Mine (Group) Company.
