Eight people were killed and 23 others injured in a traffic accident Monday afternoon in Linzhi prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region, southwestern China, said a local official in Linzhi.

A Dongfeng truck, carrying 33 people including three drivers, overturned off the road in Gongbo'gyamda county in Linzhi while traveling between villages. Six people died at the scene and two more died on their way to a hospital.

The official said the accident may have been caused by a combination of speeding, overloading and malfunction of the vehicle.
