Maldini, the team's captain, will be 39 at the end of the new deal. He has spent his whole career with AC MIlan after making his Serie A debut back in 1985.

Over that illustrious tenure, Maldini has captured seven Serie A titles with a chance to win another one this season. Through 28 games, AC Milan and Juventus sit atop the table with 63 points each.

Maldini retired from the international game back in 2002, but tallied 126 caps before walking away.

Also on Friday, Milan re-signed midfielder Massimo Ambrosini to an extension that will keep the two parties united until 2008.
