China has built energy-efficient housing totaling at least 320 million square meters in urban areas since 1986, according to official figures.

It was in the year 1986 when the country started to encourage energy-efficiency in real estate and construction-related sector,

The energy-efficient housing has helped cut energy consumption by about 10.94 million tons of standard coal, reducing emission of carbon dioxide by 23.26 million tons by 2002, according to the figures released Wednesday by the Ministry of Construction.

China made public energy-saving designing standards for residential housing in northern China in 1986.

China's energy-saving designing standards set a target of 50 percent reduction in energy consumption.
