A national census of securities businesses across China, the first of its kind in the country, is expected to start soon as everything moves smoothly with the preparations, according to China Securities Regulatory Commission. (CSRC)

"The census, part of China's economic census, is aimed to assess the entire industry and to find out solutions to various fundamental problems in the sector," said Tu Guangshao, a deputy head of the government securities watchdog.

"It will help the government in studying and making long-term development plans and improving the statistical system of the industry," he said.

The CSRC regards it as its top job for the 2004-2005 statistical year.

"The results of the study will never be used by the CSRC or any other departments to punish those that will be examined," he said.
