Starting from the spring semester of this year, 16 million poor Chinese rural students will enjoy free textbooks and tuition extras.

The Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education say they will also gradually provide living allowances to students from poor families, living on campus.

In the next three years, the Chinese Government will earmark 22.7 billion yuan or nearly 3 billion US dollars to subsidize poor rural students' primary and secondary school education.
