Introducing anteaters into Hong Kong?
(China Daily)
Updated: 2005-01-31 09:31

Anteaters roving this Chinese island metropolis of Hong Kong?

That may be seem a bit of an extreme measure to fight a fledgling infestation of red fire ants, government officials said here yesterday.

But they added they have ruled nothing out and are weighing all possible effects on the city's ecology before introducing any biological methods to exterminate the red fire ant invaders whose stings can kill a man.

Secretary for Environment, Transport and Works Sarah Liao also downplayed worries that an infestation of the solenopsis invicta, or red fire ants, will spread widely within community. The Agricultural, Fisheries and Conservation Depart-ment is studying methods other than applying pesticides on ant hills. Bringing in South American anteaters is one option.

Yesterday, a dozen more red fire anthills were found at a site near Kam Ho Road in Yuen Long near a KCRC West Rail depot, increasing the total number of nests to 199.
