A bus carrying a wedding party veered off a mountain highway in western Nepal and plunged into a river, killing at least 37 people and leaving 15 others injured, police said Saturday.

The accident took place Friday night near Mandre village, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) west of the capital, Katmandu, said local police officials reached by telephone.

Rescuers have pulled out at least 37 bodies from the wreckage, while the injured have been brought to nearby hospitals, police said.

They did not have further details on the accident.

Accidents are common on Nepal's roads, which are often in bad shape, and many buses are poorly maintained.
