Relief materials leave China for eastern Africa

Relief materials worth 10.85 million yuan (1.31 million US dollars) left north China's Hebei Province Thursday for eastern African countries affected by tsunami, such as Kenya and Somalia.

The materials are expected to arrive at Nairobi, capital of Kenya, Friday.

The relief materials include 250 tents, 4,000 toweling coverlets, 350 power generators, medicines and daily necessities, said Yang Shuzeng, an official with the Ministry of Commerce.

A massive earthquake and tsunami in Indian Ocean smashed coastline in southeastern Asia on Dec. 26 last year and the effects reached as far away as eastern Africa countries, including Kenya and Somalia.

After the disaster, Chinese government immediately provided 250, 000 US dollars to the affected countries in eastern Africa including Kenya and Somalia, and then decided to add relief materials worth 10.85 million yuan to the affected areas.
