Up to 150 people are feared dead in a ferry disaster in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The accident happened in the west of the country on the Kasai River.

An open boat designed for 120 people is said to have been carrying 200 passengers and agricultural goods when it capsized.

Most of the passengers are believed to have been women who could not swim.

Only 40 people swam to shore.

Rescue crews are searching the area.

Waterways are the main method of transport in the country which is notorious for ferry disasters.

Two hundred people died in a similar accident during stormy weather late last year.
